Dear Parents and Community,
Given the ever-changing landscape of the COVID-19 situation, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has given schools more flexibility to keep school districts closed to in-person instruction this fall. Thus we are seeking your input on possible calendar and start date changes through this quick survey.
Please complete this as soon as possible as we are already deliberating this issue.

Yearbooks are still available online only. Go to yearbookforever.com and type in Nixon-Smiley, and our school should come up. You will have to make a choice of either the High School book or the Middle School/Elementary book. High School books cost $40.00, and the Middle School/Elementary books are $25.00. These will be available online until June 5.
Attention Parents of MS and HS Students: Please have your child check their school email daily for information regarding school work, course request information for incoming grades 5-12, and other important information and announcements.
NSCISD SHAC Adventure Race has been canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
On May 15th the meal delivery and pick up service will end. However, on June 8th, our normal summer service will begin with meals available for pick up at the Nixon Cafeteria. If your family is struggling to feed your children during the gap, please contact a campus principal.
On May 8th formal remote instruction for most students will conclude. Please be sure your child(ren) have submitted all assignments and activities required.
May 8th–May 22nd teachers will work with students who are failing or have not completed the remote instruction activities.
As you have probably heard, Governor Abbott issued an executive order closing all school
campuses through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. However, instruction is not yet
over.
People with no symptoms have the potential to unknowingly spread COVID-19! That’s why it’s best for everyone in your family to stay at home and away from others as much as possible until instructed otherwise from state and local officials. #StayHomeTexas
Remember the importance of social distancing. If you must go out, avoid public spaces and keep your distance from others (at least 6 feet). If we continue to follow valuable public health guidance, fewer of our friends & family will be affected by COVID-19. #StayHomeTexas
Important Notice: On Thursday, April 9th, the Nixon-Smiley meal delivery will include 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches. We will then resume normal delivery on Tuesday, April 14th.This change is because the National School Lunch Program does not allow meals on scheduled school holidays.
#COVID19 lives on droplets in the lungs of people with the virus, even if they don’t have symptoms. When infected people breathe, the virus enters the air. If you can’t #StayHome, wear a mask/scarf/bandana, stay 6 feet apart, and wash your hands. #DontGoViral
Common symptoms of #COVID19 are fever, dry cough, & shortness of breath. If you have mild symptoms, call your doctor & #StayHome. If you develop serious symptoms, such as trouble breathing, pressure in the chest, or bluish lips or face, call your doctor & seek care immediately.
Before social distancing, each person with #COVID19 spread the virus to 2.5 more people. At that pace, most would get it, and many more people would die. But we can slow the spread. That’s why we all #StayHome. #ApartTogether we slow coronavirus.
Did you know that washing your hands with soap & water eliminates Coronavirus molecules preventing the virus from infecting you & others? The same is true when you disinfect surfaces. Science says it works. https://bit.ly/2w7TGAJ
The remote learning boards for the entire month of April will ONLY be distributed on Monday, April 6th during meal pick-up/delivery. They will also be online at www.nixonsmiley.net/remote-learning--9 or you can pick one up outside of all campus office buildings throughout April.
Practice Social Distancing
To avoid the spread of COVID-19 in our community, practice social distancing: Avoid going out in public. When in public, keep 6 feet of distance between you and others. Follow local and state guidance.Get more information at https://texas.gov/covid19
The Nixon-Smiley CISD community must work together to fight COVID-19. Head to http://tea.texas.gov/staywell for vitally important public health guidance to stop the spread. If we stand apart as a community now, we will be together again soon.
